The pictorial component of typography—its figurative and representational potential—has influenced the stylistic development of typography, as well as influencing how readers, consumers and designers interpret and use typography. By way of examples of type and lettering drawn from consumer culture, identity and brand design, and the use of how text is used in the visual arts, Miller looks for the picture in the word in order to consider what people see when they look at letters.
Abbott Miller is a partner in the international design consultancy Pentagram. His work includes identity, editorial projects, environmental graphics, digital media and exhibitions. His writing and design have been featured in numerous publications and museum collections, and his monograph Abbott Miller: Design and Content was published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2014.
